ALL ABOUT COLOR
P lu m colors—from deep eggplant to
rosy rouge—are chic with grays, khakis,
and creams. They’re equally at home
with vibrant pinks, reds, and oranges.

PLUM
PERFECT
Shades of plum are
often dismissed as
being difficult in
decorating, says
Elaine Griffin, a New
York-based interior
designer. “It’s a
surprisingly versatile
color,” she says.
“Plum is made by
combining mostly
red and blue, so any
colors that go with
those two are
beautiful with plum.”
■ Team player
Elaine uses plums
in place of dark
beige and brown
to ground rooms.
She designed this
sitting room,
lefty
with red, pink, and
khaki unified by
deep aubergine.
■ Light effects
Rooms bathed
in natural light
balance saturated
plum walls, Elaine
says. In rooms with
little light, use the
hue as an accent.
■ Best dressed
Elaine takes color
cues from this fall’s
fashion runways,
where new plum
combinations
inspired her. “Plum
is super-fresh with
greens, from lime to
oregano. I also love
it with turquoise,
gold, and orange
—yum !” (S)
